      The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association has announced its Pacific Northwest Book Awards. Winners include six books by authors from Washington state and Portland. Here's the list: "Call Author: Mary Ann Gwinn.   Kate Wilhelm has a series of novels featuring a Eugene, Oregon attorney named Barbara Holloway. I've read the first three of them and found them enjoyable, if not knock-your-socks-off great. Wilhelm wrote science fiction before turning to mysteries and the first book in the Barbara Holloway series, Death Qualified, has some odd sci-fi themes to it that didn't appeal .

      In Rochester, New York, we don’t have drive-through espresso kiosks as in the Pacific Northwest. They are ubiquitous in the Seattle area, even on the edge of wilderness. Up in the Cascades, if you need a dentist, quick, or someone who knows how to repair a transmission, you may be out of luck – but you can almost always find a cup of coffee. Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association continues their usual schedule for fall trade show preparation. After putting out the call for guest authors earlier this month, they are now asking for proposals for their education day.

      Here are my top five fantasy novels set in the Pacific Northwest, with some undeniable bias toward steampunk and strong leading ladies.
